short film analysis

this story is very easy to follow, I think the director of this short film wanted to make the story clear and easy to understand so a wide a range are able to watch it and understand this. The director choose to do something that isn't very common in filmmaking they didn't show the face of any of the character, they used mid-shot thought from the shoulders to the waist, I think the reason the director chose to do this is because they want the identity of the criminal and victim to be a mystery. Personally I like this as it is clever. The first scene starts of in the kitchen of a house, the kitchen is small, this is to show that because of the area the film is set in isn't rich, the people living in the area aren't rich so they can't afford a big house = big kitchen, the only lighting this scene is the sunlight coming this window, because the light is so bright it gives the scene enough colour.

this short film is very different to the other one in the sense that they are showing the characters faces, this short films a story but is also informative (the message at the end ), they wanted to show the audience the importance of knife crime and how it can effect so many lives. The film starts off a boy in his bedroom looking whilst listening music he has his big earphones on, the room is bright room the natural sunlight shining though the room, we are able to hear a slight beat coming. from. the earphones, they boy has no top on, it start. with a mid-shot, this is up close and personal, I think the director wanted toggle it a personal feeling, the camera. then moves and he. takes his earphone off the beat stop the camera turns to. his bedroom door, his mother is standing the in modern clothing denim jacket and look presentable she is also holding a baby that is staring the boy, she is. talking is a Yorkshire accent this is the first time we get a clue to wear the film is. set in, the natural lighting that is coming in through the room is naturally hitting her and the. baby face, threes then a small heart-felt moment between the family when the. boy calls the baby a sweet name and the mother giggles, I think the director chose to do this to give film amore personal touch. The scene then changes to a. mid-shot of the boy on. this phone, he is then receiving message on his phone and looks very stressed.
|
the scene then changes a roadman sitting on a sofa, speaking to his mother whilst rolling a cigarette, the character is wearing dark colour such as black and dark grey, this shows that he is dark and mysterious. the character sounds very aggressive in the way he is talking to his mother he is almost shouting, I think shows that he is a very aggressive. this shows the audience he maybe be the criminal, the lighting is dark fitting the scene.

The boy is checking his social media and looking at this boy profile, as an audience we could feel as though the boy's profile he is looking at could have a big part in film, close up of the phone are given so the audience can also feel although they are also looking at the film whilst he is, whilst he is looking at his phone there are some close up of his
face looking destressed, angry and scared, this let the audience connect with character on a personal level. I would like to use this in my piece (close of the face to show the facial expression), because I want my piece to be emotional I think would well. The next scene is him the kitchen, getting ready to leave the house, from the shot we are able to see that the kitchen is small but it tidy and presented well there are black surfaces and white draws etc, this shows they don't have a lot of money bu |
In this scene he is getting walking into kitchen and getting the green knife out of the draw, I feel like this is a big moment in the short film as it is the first real moment when us as an audience realises that he is the offender, I think they chose for the knife to be so brightly coloured because it stands out in the frame. The scene is moving very fast, very fast pace music is also happening thought this scene whilst this is happening, this makes a build up and the audience can see that something is about to happen it is engaging for the audience. The scene then changes to the outdoors it very bright but we also able to see its a ruff neighbourhood, this is because there is not much colour shown just bare brick walls, on some of the wall there is some graffiti this is another indication that this area is ruff, the character is on his way to meet his friends who are also roadman, we are able to hear that they are having a convocation however its not so easy to understand this makes the gang more ruff and threating. the characters/gang are wearing brands such as Nike and adaias, these brands and fashion are now being associated with roadman. The then changes once again to another set of people walking who are also roadman they are talking the same as the other two, on of the characters have there hands down the trousers this is very common for a roadman to do.
The scene then transfers back to the original gang as they notice the other two, as an audience you are able to hear a change of pitch In there voice, and you can see they have moved to try and see the other gang. The original boy then pulls out the knife that he had originally got from the kitchen and tries to give it to someone else however they don't take it as they are scared as an audience we can see a big change and although they are not a tuff as they originally looked, this is another important moment in the film. We are then shown a sped up montage of the gang walking to meet other gang fast pase music come on also. The two gangs then meet and an argument breaks out we then have a very slow and very fast montage of the victim being stabbed by the knife, the offender and his gang running away and the victim bleeding out on the floor, because this scene happens so fast it is a lot to take in a once. they have make the stabbing look very realistic and the blood also look realistic it adds to the film ands as an audience we are able to believe it really happening. The lighting is natural day light but it also looks gloomy so it fits the film. Fast pace music is also happening thought the scene it gives the scene an added affect. |
The criminal then returns home and puts the bloody knife back into the draw but leaves traces of blood on the floor, this is also very fast pace, this could indicate that he is nervous or scared. The scene then changes back to his mother in the kitchen his mother has told him she is going to make her a sandwich as pulls the knife out of the draw she is very unaware of the traces of blood that had been left it isn't till she is cutting the sandwich she notices the blood she then scream, and the criminal come into the kitchen as says I think I've killed someone and shows her the blood on this hands.
